Alessandro Grippo's geology pages

SUMMER session 2011

Professor: Dr. Alessandro Grippo, Ph.D.

GEOL 4 - PHYSICAL GEOLOGYLast Updated  •  July 9, 2011

Geology 4 is a general education class that introduces students to the basic elements of geology. It consists of a series of lectures and labs.
The lecture part will be taught by Professor Richard Robinson, while I will take care of the lab sessions.

The class will be accessible to anyone with a basic knowledge of physics, chemistry, and biology. Still, during such an intense, fast-paced session as this 6-weeks Summer course will be, you will need to pay constant attention to the materials discussed in both lecture and lab and to dedicate a considerable amount of time to study and work with the class materials.

1300 - GEOL 4, PHYSICAL GEOLOGY with Lab
Class Hours:
every Monday and Wednesday, 08:00-12:20, lecture with Professor Richard Robinson, Drescher Hall 136
every Tuesday and Thursday, 08:00-12:20, lab with Professor Alessandro Grippo, Drescher Hall 136
from June 20 to July 28, 2011

During the last week of the summer session (July 25 to 28), meetings will be as follows:
Monday, July 25: lab with Professor Alessandro Grippo
Tuesday, July 26: lab final exam
Wednesday, July 27: lecture with Professor Richard Robinson
Thursday, July 28: lecture final exam

Lecture Textbook:
Please refer to Prof. Richard Robinson for his choice of textbook(s).

Lab Textbooks:
1a: C. C. Plummer and D. H. Carlson, Physical Geology, 12th edition (2008), McGraw Hill
This textbook is also used in the lecture part of this class. I will sometime lecture out of this textbook, and I will definitely ask questions out of this textbook. You can either buy a used or a new edition of this textbook. Older editions are also not dissimilar from the current one, and are acceptable, but it will be up to you to locate the materials within the textbook.

1b: R. M. Busch, Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology, 9th edition
You need to buy a new copy of the 9th edition of this textbook. This is necessary because we will use pages from the textbook for our labs. Used copies almost always miss whole sections, or have at times text written all over them. Do not buy a used copy of this book unless you are 100% sure that there are no missing pages. You will work with color-coded exercises during the lab, so xerox copies are also not acceptable for lab exercises. I will NOT accept lab work other than on this texbook pages, no exceptions.

Exams:
1 - Thursday, June 30, 2011, in DH 136: study guide (available since June 27, 2011)
2 - Thursday, July 14, 2011, in DH 136: study guide (available since July 9, 2011)
3 - Tuesday, July 26, 2011, in DH 136: study guide (available since July 22, 2011)
